Alpine ILX-007 in-dash system with Apple CarPlay for use with iPhone
I installed this particular head unit in a 2005 GMC Denali I had which I have since given to a family member. As of this writing it is still working as designed. The unit itself was fairly simple to install but you will need some basic car radio installation knowledge, or you can seek out a YouTube video to show you how to do it. Keep in mind it is a double-din head unit so it won't fit in vehicles that are not so equipped, check out your setup before you order.
Once installed you have to connect an iPhone via the lightening cable to make the unit work with the phone, there is currently no wireless option. Obviously this is not the device for you if you have anything other than an iPhone. Keep in mind this also will not play CDs, it is only meant to basically mirror your iPhone. Once installed the IU was easy to navigate and SIRI worked exceptionally well.
Upon startup I did see the system reset unnecessarily, so it can be a bit buggy, but the restart only took 10-15 seconds. The system does come with a microphone meant to be mounted so that you can make/receive phone calls handsfree. The maps, unfortunately, are Apple Maps and not Google Maps, so if you are adverse to Apple Maps for navigation purposes, this might not be the unit for you. I was able to run Pandora and my personal music through the head unit without having to touch my phone, this is the whole point of the head unit. It also comes equipped with a couple of apps (Spotify and Stitcher) and is expected to add more in the future.
Overall: a bit glitchy at times but Siri worked remarkably well. Apple Maps is the navigation option, but given it is an iPhone you can use Siri for directions by simply stating what you are looking for then touching the head unit screen to get the directions and route. There is no convention volume knob but a up/down button on head unit. You will want to purchase aftermarket steering wheel control retention products for your particular model. As this was a GMC, we used the PAC-RP5 GM11.
Pros: great UI, easy use of Siri, great bluetooth calling, easy installation. Apple Maps works very well.
Cons: Apple Maps instead of Google Maps, phone must be wired to unit, there is no wireless option. iPhone only and it doesn't play CDs. Only a couple of Apps available.
